Author Interview - Kailin Gow

Author Kailin Gow

Kailin Gow is the award-winning, international bestselling author of over 80 distinct books.

Kailin Gow is also the President of a media company, a media personality, and has been writing full-time since she was first published. Holding a Masters in communications management and leadership positions in Fortune 500 corporations, she puts her leadership abilities, her experience, and desire to help others into her fiction books. As a result, she has written the forthcoming, Finding the Heroine in You book which is also a national tour. She is a mother and spends whatever spare time she has volunteering at the Red Cross, Battered Women's Shelters, and other organizations.

Currently her Frost Series is in development for a major international MMO Game, and she has over 14,000 and growing Frosters on her facebook fan page.

What is the name of your most recent book and if you had to sum it up in 30 or less words, what would you say?
The name of my most recent book is Enchanted Frost, which is the 8th and final book in the Frost Series, a YAfantasy series about hope, love, leadership, and family.

If you gave some of your characters an opportunity to speak for themselves, what would they say?
To believe in yourself no matter what the circumstances, no matter who is for you or against you, always have faith in yourself.

Do you have plans for a new book? Is this book part of a series?
Yes, Stones to Ashes is part of the Alchemists Academy Series for age 13 and up. This series is for upper middle grade and up, and is set for 4 books. Elemental Explosions, Book 2 is already available, and book 3, The Quantum Games will be out in December or January. The final book in the series is called The Year of the Elite, and it is set to release in 2013.

What or who inspired you to write? And how long have you been writing?
I'm inspired to write because of the extraordinary circumstances (or challenges and blessings) I've experienced in life and have a compelling purpose to share them with others, hopefully being an inspiration for and to others because of my personal story and through the fiction I have, too.

I began writing almost 12 years ago, when my friend's cousin was killed during September 11, and I was volunteering on my free time from work, with the Red Cross. I began writing a book that provided resources topeople through a fiction fantasy series for girls about angels, and this series really took off and was recommended by so many organizations. This early success with my first published book and series, spurred me on to write fiction for all ages, with that same purpose.

Have you based any of your characters on someone you know, or real events in your own life?
Yes, always. My own life and the life experiences of people I know are some of the biggest inspirations for me. For instance, in Loving Summer, my book for YA, I bring up the real life issue of Diabetes with complications in a subtle, but organic way that is a natural part of the storyline. I personally know of two people close to me, who died from the type of Diabetes made awared of through Loving Summer. Ironically, I also have this condition, which I was treating and working at overcoming at the time Loving Summer had been published. I'm happy to say, due to intense research and through undergoing treatment, I was able to overcome this condition today, and I hope that a book like Loving Summer will at least bring some awareness to this condition, while still be a compelling entertaining read.

Is there a particular movie that you preferred over the book version?
Total Recall

Favorite food?
Healthy Turkey Chili. I make this so it is under 400 calories, is low sodium, low fat, low cholesterol, and helps increase metabolism. It's a recipe that's in my cookbook, The Loving Summer Cookbook.

Vanilla or chocolate ice-cream?
Chocolate

Laptop or desktop for writing?
Laptop

Where and when do you prefer to do your writing?
Everywhere and anytime. Writing involves research, outlining, and experiencing along with the actual writing and re-writing, so everything is part of the writing process. I can honestly say that I eat and breathe writing.

One of your favorite quotes?
"If there's a will, there's a way."

Zeus and the Thunderbolt of Doom (Book 1)

After pulling a magical thunderbolt from a stone, ten-year-old Zeus goes on the adventure of a lifetime in this thrilling start to a brand-new series! The terrible Titans--merciless giants who enjoy snacking on humans--have dominated the earth and put the world into chaos. But their rule is about to be put to the test as a group of young Olympians discover their powers and prepare to righteously rule the universe....

Ten-year-old Zeus is mystified (and super-annoyed) by the fact that he keeps getting hit by lightening. Every. Single. Year. He also longs for adventure, as he has never been far from the cave where he grew up.

Zeus gets his wish--and a lot more than he bargained for--when he is kidnapped by dangerous, giant Titans! In self-defense, he grabs the first thing he sees--an actual thunderbolt he pulls from a stone that is covered in mysterious markings. Zeus is the only one who can decipher the markings, and sets off on a quest to rescue his youthful fellow Olympians from the evil Cronus. Armed with his trusty thunderbolt (named Bolt, of course), Zeus is on an adventure of a lifetime--and a journey to fulfill his destiny as King of the Gods.

Hades and the Helm of Darkness (Book 3 coming April 2013)

The Heroes in Training are entering the Underworld—if Hades can conquer his canine fears, that is.

The Underworld usually isn’t really meant to be a fun place—but tell that to Hades! He loves the dark and the stinky smell of sulfur. However, there is one thing that Hades is not a fan of: dogs. And when Zeus and his fellow Olympians encounter Cerberus—a snarling, three-headed dog—Hades must conquer his fears and tame the hound so everyone can continue into the Underworld and deposit their Titan prisoner, Oceanus, back where he belongs!

But with magical water that causes forgetfulness, hot beds of lava, and another epic battle with two more Titans standing in their way, will Zeus and his heroes make it out of the Underworld with everyone intact?

Author Suzanne Williams

Suzanne Williams is the award-winning author of nearly 40 books for children, from picture books and easy readers to chapter books and middle grade fiction series. A former elementary school librarian, she lives near Seattle. Her picture book Library Lil (illustrated by Steven Kellogg) won the New Mexico children's choice award in 2000 and was on several other state award lists. She is co-author (with Joan Holub) of the popular Goddess Girls series(for ages 8 - 12) and Heroes in Training (ages 6 - 11). Other series include Fairy Blossoms and Princess Power.

Author Joan Holub

I graduated from college in Texas with a fine arts degree, and then freelanced as an art director at a graphic design firm for eight years. I dreamed of working in children's books, so I moved to New York City and became associate art director in Scholastic trade books, where I designed books for children and worked with editors and illustrators. It was a great job.

I illustrated my first published children's book in 1992 and soon began illustrating full time. I began completing manuscripts and mailing them out to publishers in the early 1990s. In 1996, I sold my first two manuscripts -- Boo Who? A Spooky Lift-the-Flap Book (Scholastic) and Pen Pals (Grosset & Dunlap). Yippee!

Now I write full time and have written and/or illustrated over 130 children's books. Creating books that entertain, inform, and interest children (and me) is a fabulous job that I truly love.

Author Interview - Ann T Bugg

Author Ann T. Bugg

Ann T. Bugg is the Queen of her castle in southern Minnesota where she lives with her Knight in shining armor (who has come to her rescue more than once) and her own little Princess Valerie. The pets in her magical kingdom come in all shapes and sizes, as do all the critters that make their way out of the enchanted forest. Horseback riding, long walks with her dogs (Otter & Dottie pictured above) and embroidering are on her list of hobbies, but writing will always be her first love.

Ann also writes Women's Fiction under the name June Kramin

Where were you born and where do you call home?
I was born in Philadelphia but moved to Maui when I was 4. I currently live in Minnesota, but I always refer to Maui as home. "You can take the girl out of the island, but you can't take the island out of the girl." ~ Me :)

Do you have plans for a new book? Is this book part of a series?
Currently there are 9 books in this series. 8 that follow the girls as the girls get a year older. #9 I did as a prequel... but it's in the perfecting stages. Now that the books are bring published, I'm toying with adding more.

What or who inspired you to write? And how long have you been writing?
That one is easy. My daughter. She was encouragement through the first book for sure. As I wrote a chapter, I let her read it. She always nagged for the next chapter, even offering to do the outside chores so I would sit & write. This series started about seven years ago. It was shortly before that when I completed my 1st women's fiction. Although I had been told since the 3rd grade that I would be a writer, it took years for me to settle down and actually do it.

How did you come up with the title and cover design?
My daughter is my cover artist. I let her run with her vision of them. I got the okay from the publisher to let her have a stab at the cover for #1 - we were all floored. She was 14 at the time. The titles just happened. I try to keep a similar theme with them. As far as the series name, I was surprised when I searched for the domain & it was available. I bought it right away, not when knowing if there would be a book 2 - let a lone dream of being published someday.

Have you based any of your characters on someone you know, or real events in your own life?
Hubby laughs at me because in my books, there is the standard disclaimer in the books about the characters being fictional, then you go to my website & I have "Meet the real Val & Sam!" LOL. The girls were my inspiration for the books, as well as the critters. Even the possum in #1 is what started it all. I have to admit, most of my women's fiction are inspired by things that really happen. I take a lot of liberties with my colorful life! "Be careful or you'll end up in my novel" has never rang more true.

Do you prefer ebooks, paperbacks or hardcover?
I fought the whole e-book thing for a long time. I was on a computer all day working, writing or editing. The last thing I wanted was a computer device in bed. When I finally got my hands on one I was shocked. "Wow! It is like reading paper." I am hours from a Barnes & Noble. I loved getting things right now & way cheaper. I'm also a recycle freak so the saving a tree thing is what won me over.

Are there any new Authors that have grasped your interest and why?
All I read are new authors. I am not self published, I have 3 smaller presses that I work with. We have all become a family & support each other. I have found incredible reads & ventured into some genres that I wouldn't have found otherwise. Being a part of a writer's forum, I find great reads there as well. (Note - these are not middle grade reads!!) Kelly Meding has an amazing urban fiction series, I loved a surprise find by Rhea Rhordan - Finding Grace, a wonderful story my Mary Cote - Cabochon, and a new YA series coming up by a friend - Flicker by Melanie Hooyenga, another YA -Fool Me Once by Honey Boudreaux. I could go on & on. I'm going to dedicate a page at both of my site to all these amazing reads. I never get in on the discussions of all the books that make the NY bestsellers. All I can say is, a lot of these finds should have been on that list.

Do you write under a pen name?
Ann T Bugg is a pen name. I publish women's fiction under my real name - June Kramin. I never wanted an 8 year old to pick one up & say, "Oh! I know her!" and be in for a biiig surprise :) I have been called "Bug" most of my adult life. "Auntybug" became a nickname when friends & family started having kids. I ran with it :)

Cory Wells-Richards left her cheating husband behind and headed straight back to tiny Faythe, Wisconsin, eager to create a new future for herself. First order of business, keep her promise to a dear friend and finish the renovation on the Victorian for dearly departed Tillie and find homes for her nine cats. How tough could that be? But when Tillie's great-nephew shows up to help, it's all she can do not to fall right back into his arms. She's been down that heartbreak road with him before, and coming off her recent divorce she's determined to guard her heart, no matter how sexy he looks with a hammer in his hand and his shirt off.

Jake is caught between a rock and a hard place. Well, between his party-hearty, successful big city life in Chicago and the sleepy hometown he was glad to see in his rear-view mirror at the tender age of 18. He plans to fulfill his promise to Tillie and help restore her house to get it ready to sell, then return to his comfortable life in Chicago. But how is he supposed to get any work done with pretty little Cory around doing her best to drive him crazy? Being in Faythe rekindles all those long forgotten memories, some bad and some good--including his desire for Cory, the one girl he couldn't have.
As the sexual tension between Cory and Jake heightens and their emotional connection strengthens, will they let down their barriers long enough to find true love, or will the pain of the past keep them apart forever?

Author Interview - Samuel Ben White

Author Samuel Ben White

Samuel Ben White (“Sam” to his friends) is the author of the national newspaper comic strip “Tuttle’s” (found at www.tuttles.net) and the on-line comic book “Burt & the I.L.S.” (found at www.destinyhelix.com). He is married and has two sons. He serves his community as both a minister at a small church and a chaplain with hospice. In addition to his time travel stories, Sam has also written and published detective novels, a western, three fantasy novels and four works of Christian fiction.

What or who inspired you to write? And how long have you been writing?
From my earliest memories, my parents read to me. And they encouraged me to learn to read for myself. Our home was full of books and people who wrote them were held in high regard. So I always wanted to be one of “those guys”, the guys who could throw words on a paper and have them form into a compelling story that people read and talked about. Since first grade, I have tried to write and have loved hearing from the people who read.

Have you based any of your characters on someone you know, or real events in your own life?
Many of my characters start out with vague resemblances to real people, friends and relatives. It helps in the beginning to ask myself, “How would Bud act if dropped into this situation?” As the story develops and the characters develop, though, they become less and less like the person who initially lent their personality or looks to the character. Sometimes they become composites of more than one person (because “Bud would never do anything to land in that situation … but you know, Carol might!”).

One funny thing happened along these lines. I had patterned much of one of my characters after a friend of mine from high school. The character of Marianne was described as looking like my friend who I’ll call Lindsay (to protect the innocent), and had many of Lindsay’s personality traits. During an early draft of the story, I became friends with a young woman who had recently lost her father and that event found its way into Marianne’s back story. Flash forward twenty-something years (and countless rewrites) and I met up with Lindsay by accident. We got to talking and I was telling her about the book and we were discussing life and I was shocked to learn that her father was still alive. I had forgotten that that “little” element came from someone else’s life. I did get a reader out of that, though, because Lindsay’s father read the book after he heard I had killed him off in it.

What books have most influenced your writing most and why?
I tell people I’m something of a flamingo. When they look at me with cocked eyebrow, I explain that flamingos aren’t pink at birth, but become pink due to their diet. I am flamingo-like in that I have ingested so much Louis L’Amour that it’s no surprise when people tell me that my writing reminds them of his (even though all but one of my books aren’t westerns in the strictest sense of the term). I can’t say that one of his books has influenced me more than another (though my favorites are “Bendigo Shafter” and “Mustang Man”) but I love his sense of style, his descriptions of the scenery, and the pacing of his books. He writes about what’s happening! Most of all, though, I think I have been influenced by the way that even when he’s not describing the scenery he has placed the characters and events on actual ground he has walked. For my writings, it’s very important to me to know that I have walked through La Plata Canyon or downtown Dallas and I think that comes through in my novels.

Have you ever read a book more than once?

There are several books I have read more than once, and for different reasons, but mostly because there is a certain comfort in some books—like going back to a favorite vacation spot. I went through a period (around the college years) where I collected books, filling up my shelves with books, some great and some not-so-great. But then real life hit and the concept of disposable income disappeared and so the books I bought (and kept) were just those I was pretty sure I would return to—either for reference or for one of those vacations. All other books were either borrowed from the library or bought (and later sold) at used book stores. I have teenagers now—so still no disposable income—which means that I’m still pretty parsimonious about what I purchase, even as to my beloved books.

Is there a particular movie that you preferred over the book version?
Only one: “Field of Dreams”. In all other cases, the book is far superior to the movie (even in the case of movies I loved, like the Lord of the Rings and Narnia trilogies). “Field of Dreams” is based on the novel “Shoeless Joe” by W.P. Kinsella. It’s an excellent book and I had read it a couple years before the movie came out. When I heard they were making a movie of it I was skeptical—being of the general opinion that “Hollywood ruins all books”—but I saw “Field” on opening night in Dallas and was blown away. Not only had the film-makers captured the spirit of the book, they had improved upon it by creating visuals that put me right in the corn field in an even stronger way than the book had done.

What book are you currently reading and in what format (ebook/paperback/hardcover)?
“Riders of the Purple Sage” by Zane Grey, on Kindle. It’s one of those seminal books—not just of “westerns” but of American lit in general—that I had always heard about but had never gotten around to reading it. This past weekend I had just finished a P.G. Wodehouse book and was looking for something to read when I remembered that I had put “Purple Sage” on my Kindle shortly after purchasing the unit two years ago (when I was stocking up on all the old, free, classics) and started in on it. Excellently written book and easy to see why it’s held in such high esteem.

What are your thoughts on book trailers?
Personally, I find them annoying (partly for one of the reasons I usually don’t like movie or TV adaptations of books). One of my favorite things about reading a work of fiction is seeing it all in my mind. It feels like some of that is taken away from me when a trailer shows me what the lead character looks like, for instance.

What is the best advice that you have ever been given when it comes to writing?
Just write. Improving my writing and writing on a schedule and writing every day and all those other pieces of wisdom have their place, but the most important advice given to me (by many, many people) is to just keep writing.

Laptop or desktop for writing?
Both, but probably 70% desktop. I like my laptop and it’s great when I just want to get off somewhere and write, but for whatever reason I feel like I do my best work sitting upright, at a desk, John Williams music pouring from the stereo. Mostly, it’s probably a mental thing that sitting at the desk seems more purposeful and business-like.
List 3 of your all time favorite movies?
“It’s a Wonderful Life”
“Field of Dreams”
“Star Wars – A New Hope”

"I've had a few very unproductive but enjoyable days thanks to Samuel Ben White. If you haven't read Sam's books you have been missing a treat. These were funny, suspenseful, spiritual and kept you turning the pages."
~Karen S.

"Just wanted to say how much I have enjoyed your books. I have a Kindle and I have purchased all of the Garison Fitch novels. I am in Saudi Arabia and your books have really helped take me away from here."
~Scott, Saudi Arabia

Also Part of the Series:

Saving Time

Two years ago Garison Fitch traveled through time and rewrote history. An accident in the eighteenth century created a whole new world, and even gave Garison a wife he had never met before. Now, he’s got a daughter and he’s coming to enjoy this world he created. Until he’s attacked by men masquerading as Indians, and a funeral procession from out of the past enlists his help, and a tree grows from sappling to full-grown in a matter of minutes, threatening his daughter’s very life. Time itself is unraveling and Garison’s trips through time seem to be the cause. Garison must go back in time once again and keep himself from making the original trip that started the problem. But he can’t use his time machine to go back. How does one sew up a rip in time?

Lost Time

Jason Kerrigan and Brownwyn Dalmouth are pilots with the Republic of Texas Army Air Corps. A world war is going on and bombs have just brought an end to Crockett Air Field in south Texas. Jason and Bronwyn, though, are called away from the battle to be test pilots for a new aircraft that-they're told-will bring the war to an end. The experimental craft lives up to expectations in early tests, but then it lands them somewhere it never should have sent them. Another place? Another time? Another dimension? Somehow, they've taken a trip to the future and changed the past. Or did they? The answer to their change of reality may be known to a Justice of the Peace in Colorado named Garison Fitch. To figure it out, though, Garison may have to team up with his least favorite person: Bat Garrett.

Really enjoyed this book. The story draws you in, and the characters are engaging, especially Rourk. I've never read a book about elves, so I wasn't sure what to expect. This was really good. Would recommend to anyone interested in a quick, fun, paranormal read.

Dieting can mean giving up your favorite foods, spending hours in the kitchen preparing meals, not enjoying meals with friends, and paying a fortune on costly health foods. Factor in the stress of trying to change your dietary habits, and it's no wonder having to muster up the motivation to stay on a diet can feel downright impossible.

But if sticking to a diet was impossible, then how can a person that ate fast food every single night, drank a half a gallon of sugary soft drinks a day, and hated healthy foods transform into someone that has eaten a healthy diet everyday for 9 years straight?

The answer may have something to do with a few little known secrets about human psychology that allow you to completely transform the wiring in your brain.

Fitness expert and former unhealthy eater Derek Doepker shares with you the same strategies used by himself and many others to successfully overcome all of the obstacles to getting and staying motivated on a diet.

Angry Mobs and Founding Father – Michael E. Newton
Genre – History
Rating – PG
4.1 (14 reviews)

Angry mobs launched the American Revolution when they protested against British acts of tyranny. These rebels threatened, harassed, and chased away British officials and Loyalists. The Founding Fathers agreed with the goals of these Patriots, but not with their methods. Fearing anarchy, the Founders channeled the passion of the mobs toward independence.

Working together, the angry mobs and Founding Fathers defeated the mighty British army and won independence, but the new nation that emerged was anarchic and chaotic, much like the angry mobs themselves. Meeting behind closed doors, the Founding Fathers conspired to depose the Confederation government, wrote a new constitution, and created the world's most successful republic.

Angry Mobs and Founding Fathers tells the little-known story of how these two groups fought for control of the American Revolution.
