Ken Brosky received his MFA in fiction writing from the University of Nebraska-Omaha. He also teaches English at Madison College. This is his first Young Adult series.
Isabella Fontaine owns a farm in Wisconsin and enjoys reading weird books like House of Leaves. This is her first Young Adult series.
What are you most proud of accomplishing so far in your life? I think teaching college English is the most rewarding accomplishment. I enjoy seeing the students progress through each semester, getting better at writing AND thinking. I especially like it when my students display critical thinking skills. It'll come in handy once they've graduated. Teaching definitely beats when I was making coffee for grumpy people.
What is your favorite food? Anything with s'mores. I like s'mores Pop-Tarts, s'mores granola bars, and s'mores plain. There used to be a s'mores cereal but then it disappeared. I assume it was so unhealthy that the cereal maker decided to eliminate it before they were sued.
What’s your favorite place in the entire world? I think Greece is the most beautiful place I've visited. Especially the little towns atop cliffs that overlook the Mediterranean Sea. So beautiful, so fun to explore. Skiing down a mountain can be a temporary favorite place, though.
What inspired you to write your first book? I was into comics for a long time. Then I made the jump into something more like a book, but with pictures. Then at some point I realized I liked the writing more than the drawing, and so I set aside drawing.
Do you intend to make writing a career? I think teaching will always be a first. But I do enjoy the little royalty check I get from Amazon every month. Who knows? Maybe I can write enough books that it DOES become a career. It's not easy, though.
Can you share a little of your current work with us? We're working on the next book of The Grimm Chronicles, of course! Alice is heading to Europe, where she'll have to forge new alliances and come face-to-face with the consequences of the Grimm Brothers' terrible magic. It's going to be a blast. New friends, new enemies, and more than a few monsters. Plus a few familiar fairy tales to boot!
Who designed the cover? Chris Smith does all of our cover designs. And he's fantastic!
How do you promote this book? Oh, by contacting hundreds of book bloggers. Then I take a break, resting my sore wrists. Then I send out more emails. "Here!" I say, shoving a copy of the book in their faces. "Here! Take it! It's free! You don't even have to review it right away! Just get to it when you get the chance. We're patient. But please ... give us a chance. Thank you. Thank you so much."
Is there a message in your novel that you want readers to grasp? I'm really big on preaching non-violence as a solution between human beings. When it comes to monsters, the gloves come off. But one of the things I never read anymore is stories that don't end up turning into one big fight to solve all of the conflicts. People--especially young adults--need to see more non-violent solutions played out in our media so we don't forget that in the real world, using violence to solve your problems very rarely brings about a good solution.
Are you reading any interesting books at the moment? Yes! I'm reading George Saunders, who's just a fantastic author. He writes fiction that's usually just a little bit in the near-future, but his writing style is so easy to get into. I strongly recommend "Civilwarland in Bad Decline." Absolutely fantastic.
