On a cloudy Thursday in April, Detective Lieutenant Sam Jenkins retired from a very large and overworked police department in New York.

The next day, he and his wife, Kate, closed the sale on their Long Island home, put their Scottish terrier, Bitsey, in the car, and drove to East Tennessee. They had vacationed there several times and purchased land with a view on the peaceful side of the Smoky Mountains.

In retirement, they planned to travel and take advantage of a slower lifestyle. But that didn’t last. Kate took on several volunteer jobs, and Sam, bought a mid-life crisis car, a restored 1967 Austin-Healy 3000. Then he created the ultimate vegetable garden.

After years of relative idleness, Jenkins realized the missing element in his life was the adrenalin kick he got from being a cop. Coincidentally, the neighboring town of Prospect began looking for a new police chief. It was a match made in heaven—well almost.

Beach Living: 7 Popular Reasons People Move To The Beach by Anna Seeger

Millions plan their summer vacations at sunny beach destinations. However, coastal living is an entirely different matter. I have always dreamed of what beach life would be like for a permanent resident. Approaching the big 50, I decided it was now or never.

I started researching beaches. I thought anything is possible. So I started looking at coastal towns primarily in the United States. I was actually looking for the best beach towns to live in. It was so exciting. It was hard to narrow it down, but I finally developed a list of the best coastal cities. I was looking at my computer screen making sounds as if I was eating a box of chocolates. The ooh...awe, oh my, this is my favorite, oh isn't this beautiful became common sounds.

I found there are many reasons for people moving to the coast. It isn't always just to swim in the water, walk on the beach, snorkel or to simply listen to the waves crashing against the shore. I knew that I had enjoyed many of these activities when I visited the beach, but I never realized that these and other different beachfront activities were some of the primary reasons others wanted to relocate to a beach town.

I found 7 main reasons people love about living at the beach. They are as follows:

(1) Beachcombers - Includes those laid back people that just want to walk along the beach, smell the ocean air and pick up the sea shells. For these folks, there are many beach towns that would do the do the trick.

(2) Water Lovers - Kayakers, kiteboarders, snorkelers, scuba divers - active water enthusiasts. Not every beach town lends itself to these particular activities, but you could get a good list from researching for best Florida beach towns or maybe even best California beach towns.

(3) Boating Group - Like to ride the ocean waves by sail, paddle, or motor, Where is the best beach town to live for this group of enthusiasts?

(4) Fishing Enthusiasts - People that love to fish the seas and shorelines. This list could include best coastal cities and small coastal towns.

(5) Nature Lovers - Folks that enjoy seaside birds, animals and critters that emerge from the sand. When you move to the beach, you should know that some towns have beaches that really lend themselves to enjoying mother nature.

(6) Lovers of Culture - Sophisticates that enjoy the arts with an ocean view. If you are lover of culture, then you probably won't be looking at the most affordable beach towns, but will rather be compiling your list from some of the best coastal cities that have ample opportunity to enjoy the arts.

(7) Golfing Addicts - Golfers that crave the ultimate golfing experience of Scottish style links against a backdrop of vast blue water. Fortunately, there are many beach communities from small coastal towns to large beach cities that offer beautiful golf courses where you can play with the ocean as part of the permanent scenery.

From award-winning North Carolina writer Dawn DeAnna Wilson (author of "Leaving the Comfort Cafe") comes this novel of tangled lives desperately searching for a new beginning.

Mallory has a neurological condition which causes her to see certain letters in different colors and taste certain flavors whenever she hears sound. The condition is synesthesia, and researchers believe it may be caused by overlapping brain neurons...but try explaining that to her well-meaning but clueless friend Rochelle, who seems to be more concerned with rescuing animals.

Rochelle takes Mallory to New York City for New Year's Eve to help Mallory forget about the man she has a crush on, and en route to city, their paths intersect other pilgrims seeking a new beginning. All of these characters are connected, yet very few realize the closeness and intensity with which their paths cross---sometimes with disastrous results.

The novel takes the reader from North Carolina to Atlanta to New York City, illustrating that all things are bound together in a web of life---all things connect. What we do to the web, we do to ourselves

Rating - PG-13
5.0 (6 reviews)
FREE until 30th August 2012

Corinne Sanders is a young woman with plenty of ambition and her whole life ahead of her. She’s naturally inquisitive, independent and career-minded. Yet somehow, Corinne can’t escape the unresolved issues of her past.

As a court reporter and criminal justice major, Corinne’s uncanny intuition has held her back from truly experiencing the life she was always meant to live. She’s always had a knack for solving mysteries and she’s about to head into a whirlwind of her own.

As a foster child, found on the doorstep of a hospital, with only her name embroidered on a blanket of mystery wrapped around her tiny form. She bounced around from home to home and witnessed abuse after abuse. Even now, Corinne can’t shake the feelings of abandonment and mistrust that haunt her daily. She puts forth a brave face to the world, but hides the wounds of an insecure child behind her mask.

Perhaps Corinne has good reason to be completely incapable of trust. Everyone around her seems to be leading a double life these days. Just when her fiancé Daniel urges her to trust him, she finds out he’s keeping secrets from her. Also, her life-long friend Sam turns out to have a hidden dark side. So who can she trust?

That’s the moment Corinne’s long-lost family returns from the shadows. Her entire world is thrown into a complete tailspin. Yet are these new, familiar faces worthy of her trust? They belong to an enigmatic and powerful organization with an amazing influence of control and manipulation.

Yet, she feels an uncanny kinship toward her newfound relatives. As Corinne begins to unlock mysteries of the past, tremendous abilities are unlocking inside her as well. What everyone jokingly called her “wacky sense” was becoming a powerful sixth sense, threatening to consume Corinne’s very existence. Does her secretive father hold the secrets that could save her life?

She soon has a wedding to plan with her fiancé Daniel. She finds her twin brother Aaron and a surrogate sister named Lisa. Together, Corinne tries to stitch together some semblance of a normal family life. Yet, what is normal for a family of genetically engineered super beings.

Lisa has the power to absorb injuries and heal wounds. Aaron has super strength but lacks the social graces of a normal young man. Corinne’s powers seem to be the strongest, ranging from telepath to out-of-body projection. She can read minds and control them. By working together, the three siblings not only predict a whirlwind of catastrophes but they have the talents to help prevent them.

While Corinne is out saving the world, she realizes that her personal life is also suffering. Once, Corinne worried that her fiancé Daniel was leading a double life, but now the tables have turned. It’s Corinne who tries to keep her super powers a secret from the love her life. That’s pretty difficult when Corinne and her super siblings are making the six o’clock news with their feats of heroism. Their anonymity is constantly threatened but so is their safety.

Although Corinne freed Aaron and Lisa from Conner, even this dog has his masters, and they want Corinne and the entire project eliminated. Now, Conner is back to doing what he does best: pulling Corinne’s strings like a master puppeteer. He may not be able to use his own telepathic powers against her, but he most certainly can hurt the ones she loves most.

Just as Corinne finally gets to experience a sense of belonging, and come closer to finding out the answers to her past, an explosive situation once again threatens to shatter her world to pieces. The ghosts of the past finally show their faces and even greater villains emerge in Corinne’s turbulent life.

Angels Mark (The Serena Wilcox Mysteries) by Natalie Buske Thomas
Genre - Thriller/Mystery
Rating - PG-13
4.8 (10 reviews)
FREE until 31st August 2012

The book every American should read: a disturbing thriller about American government, a female president, and the future of the nation. ANGELS MARK is a suspense novel ripped from today's headlines! Readers who are weary of a bipartisan American government, poor economic news, political posturing and bickering and a deadlocked two-party system will find ANGELS MARK to be a satisfying read: the perfect anecdote to watching the news.

Serena Wilcox and her family have destroyed their old home and faked their deaths to go off the grid under new identities, after obtaining insider information about a threat to the United States. The attack does indeed happen, and after the resulting war (not the focus of this book), America is geographically divided between two governing presidents: John Williams is conservative and Japanese-American Ann Kinji is liberal. While the new government structure is still in its infancy Serena uncovers a conspiracy (the main plot) that could get her killed. Futuristic America is in the hands of former private detective Serena Wilcox, a scary prospect for sure!

Conservatives, liberals and independents will all find themselves in this book. The controversial scene "a private meeting of the two presidents" is alone worth the read. By the end of the book, all ideologies will see who the real winners and losers are.

The Serena Wilcox Mysteries are hard to classify into a single genre, and are a genre all their own: crimes that have never happened (yet) either because the technology doesn't exist, or because no one has thought to do it. Other features of the series are its offbeat plots (plots-within-plots with many twists and endings readers can't guess) and no graphic violence or sexual content, yet edgy (hardboiled) and contemporary, even futuristic, when read the same year as the publishing date; the books written in 2000 or earlier have lost most of that edge.

The series has been labeled Christian or religious due to the author's mention of praying or faith, yet readers who don't share her views have commented that the series is not "preachy" and religious bias was slight and not offensive. Readers have commented that they appreciate a clean fun read, regardless of religious views.

The Serena Wilcox Mysteries books 1-3; GENE PLAY, 1998, VIRTUAL MEMORIES, 1999, and CAMP CONVICTION, 2000 are light page-turners with creative plots. The writing, especially in GENE PLAY, is simplistic. The books are nonetheless fun to read if readers want insight into the "grown up" version of the series. Readers who want to read the earlier titles in the Serena Wilcox mystery series can find the first three books in the series, plus commentary, in a 3-book set titled: "The Serena Wilcox Mysteries: Books 1, 2 & 3". Reading the earlier titles is not necessary to enjoy ANGELS MARK.
ANGELS MARK is book #4 of the Serena Wilcox Mysteries. It is written in a different style from books 1-3 and stands-alone nicely. However, it is the prequel for COVERT COFFEE, book #5, and should be read before reading COVERT COFFEE, September 2012. The series has a dramatic change in writing style from book #3 to book #4. Books #4-6 should be read in order.

The Serena Wilcox mystery series is categorized as humorous, while also being hard-boiled. More than one reader has said about Serena Wilcox, "(if she were a real person) I'd like to have (her) as a friend".

ANGELS MARK is a fast-paced novel of suspense, justice, mystery, and humor. Read ANGELS MARK before moving on to COVERT COFFEE (September 2012).
