Memoirs of a Gas Station
Genre – Travel, Humor, Memoirs
Rating – R
3.8 (38 reviews)
Free until 02 October 2012
Early one May, Sam Neumann arrived in the breathtaking wilderness of Denali, Alaska with a smile on his face and adventure in his heart. But less than 24 hours later, both had evaporated as he stood behind the counter of a filthy gas station—his new place of employment—and tried to piece together what exactly had gone wrong. MEMOIRS OF A GAS STATION is a quirky personal account of a summer trapped in a convenience store on the edge of Denali National Park. It is a journey across the Alaskan tundra and headlong into the ridiculous world of seasonal employment.

The summer began with shock, horror, and denim shirts as Sam struggled to accept his new role as a gas station employee. To escape it, he took to the forests of Denali at every free moment, soon finding himself face-to-face with an angry adult moose, shivering numb trying to last the night on a frigid mountainside, and being seduced by a Mormon divorcee. Often satirical, sometimes introspective, and always brutally honest, MEMOIRS OF A GAS STATION takes you on a raucous ride through the best and worst summer of one man's life.

From booze-soaked employee parties to one very awkward romantic episode in a tree house, Sam learned more than he ever planned about the Last Frontier. But weekends spent stumbling through seedy Alaskan bars and hitch-hiking to remote destinations gave him a unique perspective on life, and led him to find friendship, adventure, and love in the most unexpected places.

Max Acton, murderous sociopath and Arizona cult leader, has gained possession of a long-hidden sacred Navajo artifact with the ability to reanimate the dead. Acton aims to use the stone in a murderous plot to kidnap Parker and steal his revolutionary new software design developed for the U.S. Department of Defense, selling it to the highest bidder and making millions.

When China claims the entire South China Sea and all the islands as its sovereign territory, more than 1.4 million square miles of ocean become a part of China, including waters more than 1200 miles from the Chinese coast. For centuries these waters have belonged to the seven nations bordering them along with billions of barrels of undersea oil and trillions of cubic feet of natural gas.

When China uses its navy to enforce these claims, sinking an aged Philippine warship that had once been an American WWII destroyer, the world finds itself on the brink of war. A young American couple and a old Chinese woman from whom the government has taken everything become pawns in China's cynical ploy. But though the Chinese woman is broken, she is not bowed. She and the young Americans, both children of former US Navy Seals, show China that the human spirit is more powerful than any warship.

Orangeberry Book Tours - Sleeping Dogs: The Awakening

In this dark thriller of political intrigue, a foreign interest, successor to the deeply embedded assets of the former Soviet Union, has spent decades and limitless capital subverting the social, political, and economic infrastructure of the United States. It has gained control of the White House. Congress and the Supreme Court are almost in hand. But its handpicked President has gone off the reservation and his handlers want him killed. The assassination has to look like right wing zealots committed the act.
The “Team”, a small but powerful group from the intelligence and military communities and well-funded by certain private sector interests, is attempting to combat this foreign threat.
Principal antagonists include a Russian operative who reports directly to the president of the Russian Federation, a billionaire arbitrager who launders and distributes the funds used to infiltrate and subvert the critical elements of American society, an amoral, ambitious, and greedy US senator with his roving eye on the presidency, and a mysterious, terrifying killer named Maksym.
Opposing them, the Team is led by a retired no-bullshit intelligence operative, an Old School Marine Corps general, and the most dangerous group of human beings on the planet – a former black ops unit known as the Sleeping Dogs. These men are Mother Nature’s beta models for the next leap forward in human evolution – stronger, faster, smarter. Their original blacker-than-black ops purpose was deemed too politically incorrect by a former president. The operation was shut down by Executive Order, which also called for the termination of the members of the unit with extreme prejudice. They learned of it in time to fake their deaths and went underground for almost two decades. Now the Team has called them back into service. Someone has let the Dogs out! Over 8oo years ago Chaucer warned of the dangers of waking sleeping dogs. Now someone will pay a horrific price for such foolishness.
A morality tale of good and evil, Sleeping Dogs: The Awakening is a political thriller that showcases some of the latest developments in technology, weaponry and genetic research. Its geopolitical intrigue and the protagonists’ brutal defense of liberty will remind readers of the work of authors Lee Child and David Baldacci. Relentlessly entertaining and thought provoking, the book blends heart-stopping action with a dangerous and plausible political scenario of the country’s subversion from within. It is the first of a planned trilogy.

**Please Note: For mature readers. Contains sexual situations and strong language** We all have had our fair share of bad relationships and lost ourselves along the way. Our self-beliefs often dictate our reality and we therefore attract into our lives our limitations in the form of experiences, people and environments and continue to do so until we become self-aware of the repetitive behavior. This book is for people who often ask themselves "why do I attract the wrong relationships" or "why do I attract people in my life that can't be exclusive to me" or you often believe that there is something wrong with you. I can tell you that there is nothing wrong with you because I have been there and through a lot of soul searching and reading, I realized that it was up to me to change my old self-beliefs to new beliefs and create a new reality which in turn became my new life.

This book will take you on a journey of Katrina's life. It is a two part series and it shows how we often are blinded by the truth Katrina Michaels is a forty year old woman who is obsessed with pleasure; the more she gets, the more she wants. Her world revolves around seductive sexual experiences that give her the high she craves. Katrina is involved in a tumultuous affair with Mark, a married man, and soon finds herself way in over her head. During their wild and secret sexcapades, the heat of their affair builds to a fever pitch. Through the explosive climax of the affair, she learns who she is and that a hard look in the mirror can reflect an image that can be hard to stomach. In book one, Katrina's desire is to get attention and she walks, talks, and dresses to ensure that she receives exactly what she wants.

With her late night party lifestyle and a drinking habit, she is a woman on the edge of completely losing the shred of control she has left. As Katrina spirals further out of control, she is faced with many situations that cause her to realize that she is screwing up her life. At first, she couldn't care less, because she cannot see that she is doing anything wrong. To Katrina, life is all about fun, sex, and no responsibility. She uses men and her body to gain what she wants. Through this steamy novel, readers are taken along on Katrina's journey of self-discovery. They experience what she experiences and feel her every emotion.

They see that she cannot be her true self and that her world is a plastic bubble that she has created to keep others out. Her greatest fear is that someone will see the real her and she will be rejected and devastated. An inattentive business owner, Katrina spends way too much to impress others. She is in a deficit in every aspect of her life, but does not seem to realize it. When she faces losing everything, she must make some painful decisions. Will Katrina continue down the road to self-destruction or will she finally see that she has more value than just her pretty face and sexy body?

Telephones, Who Would Want To Use Them?

Author Unknown

In 1962, four nervous young musicians played their first record audition for the executives of the Decca Recording company. The executives were not impressed. While turning down this group of musicians, one executive said, "We don't like their sound. Groups of guitars are on the way out." The group was called The Beatles.

In 1944, Emmeline Snively, director of the Blue Book Modeling Agency, told modeling hopeful Norma Jean Baker, "You'd better learn secretarial work or else get married." She went on and became Marilyn Monroe.

In 1954, Jimmy Denny, manager of the Grand Ole Opry fired a singer after one performance. He told him, "You ain't goin' nowhere son. You ought to go back to drivin' a truck." He went on to become the most popular singer in America, named Elvis Presley.

When Alexander Graham Bell invented the telephone in 1876, it did not ring off the hook with calls from potential backers. After making a demonstration call, President Rutherford Hayes said, "That's an amazing invention, but who would ever want to use one of them?"

When Thomas Edison invented the light bulb, he tried over 2000 experiments before he got it to work. A young reporter asked him how it felt to fail so many times. He said, "I never failed once. I invented the light bulb. It just happened to be a 2000-step process."

In the 1940's, another young inventor named Chester Carlson took his idea to 20 corporations, including some of the biggest in the country. They all turned him down. In 1947 - after seven long years of rejections! He finally got a tiny company in Rochester, New York, the Haloid Company, to purchase the rights to his invention, an electrostatic paper-copying process. Haloid became Xerox Corporation we know today.

Wilma Rudolph was the 20th of 22 children. She was born prematurely and her survival was doubtful. When she was 4 years old, she contacted double pneumonia and scarlet fever, which left her with a paralyzed left leg. At age 9, she removed the metal leg brace she had been dependent on and began to walk without it. By 13 she had developed rhythmic walk, which doctors said was a miracle. That same year she decided to become a runner. She entered a race and came in last. For the next few years every race she entered, she came in last. Everyone told her to quit, but she kept on running. One day she actually won a race. And then another. From then on she won every race she entered. Eventually this little girl, who was told she would never walk again, went on to win three Olympic gold medals.

The moral of the above stories: Character cannot be developed in ease and quiet. Only through experiences of trial and suffering can the soul be strengthened, vision cleared, ambition inspired and success achieved.

You gain strength, experience and confidence by every experience where you really stop to look fear in the face. You must do the thing you cannot do. And remember, the finest steel gets sent through the hottest furnace. A winner is not one who never fails, but one who never quits! In life, remember that you pass this way only once! Let's live life to the fullest and give it our best.

Rise of the Fall by Ivory Autumn
Genre - YA Fantasy
Rating - PG13
4.2 (10 reviews)
FREE until 29th September 2012
This book is altogether a book. It has words, which all good books should have, and pictures too, not to mention my very own beautiful scribbling. (Which Ivory does not approve of)

It has nasty evil creatures that may be too frightening for children under the age of 0. Also it may not be suited to those old souls that are over the age 200, as there are lots of words, and old people's eyes may fail them on such a lengthy document.

Oh yes, this book it is not for sour-snouts with big noses, and large mouths. If you are such a individual, a book on how to cook grubs would be better suited to you. It is however, a book for curious young-hearted people, who like to spend their extra time in the company of talking plants, Twiskers, elves, Foglockers, Sontars, and other extraordinary beings

In this four week mini Bible Study you will discover the power of acceptance in your life. The acceptance we all have from God, and why it's important to accept our self, flaws and all. Rejection is a powerful force in our life and our Christian walk. It effects our confidence in God and His call on our life. But little do we know the power we have to let go of the control it has on us.

Rejection is also an attitude that results in an action that looks a lot like putting space between you and someone who has hurt you. I pray this book will bless you in a way where you will release idols and embrace acceptance in your life rather than the lie of rejection.

How would you feel if you published a book that had you receiving death threats two decades after it was published? The Satanic Verses was published in September 1988 and to date is still banned in at least 11 countries with predominant Muslim communities such as India, Bangladesh, Sudan, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Kenya, Thailand, Tanzania, Indonesia, Singapore,Venezuela and Pakistan. The book is said to be "blasphemous against Islam" in its detailed and fictional depiction of Islam's Satanic verses.

The title refers to a disputed Muslim tradition that is related in the book. According to this tradition, Muhammad (Mahound in the book) added verses (sura) to the Qur'an accepting three goddesses who used to be worshipped in Mecca as divine beings. According to the legend, Muhammad later revoked the verses, saying the devil tempted him to utter these lines to appease the Meccans (hence the "Satanic" verses).

Immediately after publication, the book caused such fury in the Muslim world to the point that bookstores were firebombed and Muslim communities in several nations in the West held public rallies burning copies of the book. Several people associated with translating or publishing the book were attacked, seriously injured, and even killed. Author Salman Rushdie was forced to live under police protection for many years. On 14 February 1989, a fatwā requiring Rushdie's execution was proclaimed on Radio Tehran by Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, the spiritual leader of Iran at the time.

Rushdie has reported that he still receives a "sort of Valentine's card" from Iran each year on 14 February letting him know the country has not forgotten the vow to kill him. He said, "It's reached the point where it's a piece of rhetoric rather than a real threat." Iran has rejected requests to withdraw the fatwā on the basis that only the person who issued it may withdraw it, and the person who issued it – Ayatollah Khomeini – has been dead since 1989. (Sourced from Wikipedia)

Have I read this book? Yes. And I loved it as with all of other Salman Rushdie's books. Another Salman Rushdie book I found especially captivating was Shalimar The Clown. And now, for another juicy bit, the giveaway.
