You would think I was back in New Zealand with the amount of rain that I was seeing in Singapore. Luckily the weather was perfect for visiting the Singapore Flyer yesterday and I took that chance as there was nothing but thunderstorms for today. So directing my energies elsewhere, I decided to go to Bali for a quick break. I was advised that a couple of weeks would be plenty of time to see and do everything I wanted to do, with the benefit of hindsight, I would have stayed the maximum thirty days the tourist visa would have allowed.
Now, back when I was still in New Zealand, I was working for a living (and to save up money for this trip)and one of the benefits of the job was that I dealt with people from all around the world, including Singapore. So the next day was spent catching up with my old work contacts at a very pleasant lunch. After that, I went into the city and bought a reasonably priced ticket to Bali that would leave in four days time, giving me the chance to slowly relax and prepare, leaving some of my things behind at my cousin’s house.
Thursday, 30th April and today I bought probably the biggest lifesaver for me during the whole trip. The last thing on my mind when I was packing was to buy a little video game console (Nintendo DSi) as I had thought that I didn’t travel all this way, just to hide inside playing games. What I discovered was that books are heavy, don’t last long before you finish them and require a good light to read to them to. The DSi meant that when I couldn’t read a book, I didn’t have to go bored silly.
That night I decided to go to see the Night safari. Leaving bright and early (for a night zoo anyway), I discovered that the bus service wasn’t quite as good as the train in Singapore and not only did it take forty-five minutes to arrive, it also broke down once we got on and turned the corner. This meant that we had to wait for the next bus to come and so it was that I didn’t arrive until eight-thirty. I started off the safari by going on the tram first to see everything in one quick pass, before going back on foot and seeing my favourites later. The most impressive part of the tram ride was when we passed a bull elephant and he gave us an impromptu show as he sprayed the tram with water, much to the delight and surprise of all.
