Author Talia Aikens-Nuñez
Talia Aikens-Nuñez wanted to be a meteorologist, a politician and a lawyer. She never thought she would be a writer. It was the birth of her daughter that caused her to start writing. Raising a bilingual child inspired Talia to write lyrical children’s books. These ‘first experience’ books introduce Spanish to children and parents too! Talia’s family loves nature so much that she and her husband vowed that they will always try to live close to water. She, her husband and daughter live on a river in Connecticut with their daughter Isabella.
Who is your publisher? Musa Publishing. They are a wonderful publishing company and allow their writers to have such input that it is an unimaginable blessing to have them publish my first ebook.
Will you write others in this same genre? I have written a few children’s picture books with this same format. The next one, Buenos Días Means Good Morning, will also be released by Musa Publishing also. The date is not set yet but you can check my website for that in the near future.
Can we expect any more books from you in the future? This fall, October 2013, I have a children’s chapter book that will be released by Pinwheel Books called OMG…Am I a Witch?!?! It is about a little girl that accidentally turns her brother into a dog because he continuously bothers her.
Have you started another book yet? I have. The current book I am writing is a fairy tale children’s chapter book. I started this a while ago but returned to it after I read a New York Times article about the lack of multicultural main characters in children’s books.
Is there a message in your novel that you want readers to grasp? Yes. I want my books to be fun without being preachy. But, at the same time, I want children to learn something from each book.
Why did you choose to write this particular book? For my daughter and other little girls. I thought they would like it.
What is your favorite food? Lobster. I am from New England and live across the street from a lobster company. Other than that I would say vegetables and fish. I am a pescatarian (I don’t eat meat but I do eat fish). And, living in a house of true carnivores, fish is one compromise we can all make.
When and why did you begin writing? I began writing children’s stories after my daughter was born. I wanted her to have books that introduced her to Spanish in a fun way. Most bilingual children’s books are written in English and translated into Spanish (or vice versa). I wanted the two to be interwoven seamlessly.
How long have you been writing? I wrote my first book in the 2nd grade. It was about my cat, Mickey (think 80s). I have been writing ever since but I began writing children’s stories about 5 years.
What do you consider the most challenging about writing a novel, or about writing in general? The editing process is, by far, the hardest part for me. I find it especially hard when I feel like I put forth a masterpiece and someone else tells me ‘oh no you didn’t’.
Escucha Means Listen

Take a journey through the world—just listening. Escucha Means Listen helps children discover sounds around them in English and Spanish.
